Your next meal or beverage might be a chance to help protect your eyesight. We walk through the exact spices Dr. Mark R. Grossman uses almost every day and why they matter for natural eye care, especially if you’re concerned about macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, or stubborn dry eye from nonstop screen time. This is a practical, kitchen-first conversation from Dr. Grossman, the integrative medical optometrist and licensed acupuncturist with decades of clinical experience.
We start with turmeric and its active compound, curcumin, a potent natural anti-inflammatory. Curcumin helps reduce inflammation associated with dry eye syndrome. It supports eye cells under oxidative stress. You’ll hear simple prep tips you can use tonight. Find out why it's smart to prepare turmeric with ground black pepper and a healthy fat like olive oil.
Then we get into saffron, the “expensive” spice that may be worth it for vision support. We discuss research linking saffron supplementation to improved retinal function in early macular degeneration, including enhanced contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. Learn easy ways to use tiny strands of saffron in warm water, tea, rice, baked goods, and broth.
We also cover paprika, which contains lutein and zeaxanthin. These special antioxidants are often described as internal sunglasses that help filter blue light and support the macula.
Learn how cinnamon protects the eye vessels by helping to balance blood sugar.
Finally, we mention two bonus spices: ginger for inflammation and circulation, cayenne for vitamin A and tear support, and garlic, including fermented black aged garlic.

Why Spices Matter For Vision
SPEAKER_01And today's podcast is something I do almost every day. I add spices to my food that are really good for my eyes. Certain spices are excellent for protecting eye health and delaying cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma, thanks to their potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. So let's talk about which ones I use. The most beneficial are the following.
Turmeric For Dry Eye Support
SPEAKER_01Turmeric. The active compound cucurmin is a potent natural anti-inflammatory. It helps protect delicate eye cells from environmental damage, from computer screens, and help manage dry eye symptoms. So we have an organic turmeric on our website, but if you don't want to use that one, you can always just get it from the health food store, also. So how does it do that? It reduces inflammation associated with dry eye syndrome, a condition affecting millions due to screen exposure. It helps slow macular degeneration. And it may also protect against diabetic eye complications by reducing oxidative stress in the cells. Now, how do we use it? Add turmeric, this is what I do, to soups, stews, curries, and always try to pair it with a little, I ground a little black pepper into it, and also a healthy fat like olive oil or coconut milk to boost absorption. Next
Saffron And Macular Degeneration Research
SPEAKER_01one, saffron. That's right. Known as the world's most expensive spice, saffron is worth almost every penny when it comes to eye health. Its potent antioxidants have been linked to improve visual function and they actually have shown to help macular degeneration. In fact, a 2020 study published in the Journal of Translational Medicine found that saffron supplementation improved retinal function in patients with early macular degeneration. The results showed enhanced contrast sensitivity and visual acuity. How to use it? Soak a few threads in warm water and add to rice, tea, or baked goods. So we get a saffron on our website from Life Extension Foundation, and what I do is I just open up one capsule into my broth. Now you can do it any way you want, but that's what I do. Okay.
Paprika For Blue Light Protection
SPEAKER_01Next, paprika. This vibrant spice is naturally rich in lutein and zeaxanthin. Those of you who listen to my podcast know that lutein and zeaxanthin is super duper for the macula. These two compounds act as internal sunglasses for the eyes, filtering out harmful blue light. How do we use paprika? Use smoked or sweet paprika to season vegetables, lean meats, or plant-based proteins. Also pair with leafy greens and a little of olive oil to enhance absorption. Again, paprika can support night vision and may slow the loss of vision that we have with aging.
Cinnamon For Blood Sugar And Retina
SPEAKER_01Next on our list, cinnamon. That's right, cinnamon. Put it on my oatmeal. Why? Because cinnamon balances out blood sugar. Sometimes you can even put it in coffee. It sounds tastes great in there too. Chronically elevated glucose levels can damage blood vessels in the retina. So by cinnamon, you're balancing out blood sugar levels. It improves insulin sensitivity, helps prevent blood sugar spikes, and supports vascular health. So cinnamon, I put that on my oatmeal and in my coffee.
Ginger Cayenne Garlic Bonus Spices
SPEAKER_01What other bonus spices do I put into my soups and foods? Ginger, why? Again, a super duper anti-inflammatory, supports overall circulation and reduces inflammation. That's why I love it. Cayenne pepper, for those of you who like it really spicy, is a great source of vitamin A and it can actually help improve tear production and help with dry eyes. So add these spices, and of course, I always add garlic. And actually, black age garlic is even better because it's fermented. So garlic again, super duper for helping your eyes and overall health.
