Why I Take Resveratrol And Ubiquinol Every Day For Eye And Heart Health

Dr. Marc R Grossman, OD, L.Ac. Season 6 Episode 21

Vision declines quietly, long before most of us notice it. We pull back the curtain on two daily supplements—resveratrol and ubiquinol—that work at the cellular level to protect the retina, optic nerve, and lens while supporting heart health and longevity. Drawing on decades of integrative eye care, we explain how resveratrol’s antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties help in glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, and why ubiquinol, the active form of CoQ10, is a powerhouse for mitochondrial energy and cellular resilience.

You’ll hear why statins can lower CoQ10 levels and how switching to ubiquinol can better support energy-demanding tissues like the eye. We break down food sources you can add today—dark grapes, berries, dark chocolate for resveratrol; salmon, sardines, organ meats, and pistachios for ubiquinol—along with practical tips for choosing high-quality supplements and pairing them with meals to improve absorption. The goal is simple: reduce oxidative stress, fuel mitochondria, and give your eyes the steady support they need to age well.

If you’re managing glaucoma or macular degeneration, or you’re focused on prevention, these strategies help stack the odds in your favor. We tie research insights to everyday choices, from diet upgrades to smart supplementation, so you can build a sustainable plan for long-term eye health.

I'm Dr. Mark Grossman, integrative medical optometrist, acupuncturist, in practice for over 45 years, and author of five books on natural eye care. And today's podcast is on two supplements that I myself take every day for many different reasons, from eye health to cardio health to longevity. Reversatrol is a natural polyphenol found in grapes and other plants, and it shows protective effects against age-related eye disorders, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, and even glaucoma. These benefits are attributed to its strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties. Ubiquinol is also an antioxidant, but this one's so important for cellular energy and can protect cells from damage. That's why it's super important if you're on a statin, because statins will reduce your levels of ubiquinol, otherwise known as coenzyme Q10. So if you're on statins, make sure you are supplementing with ubiquinol or coenzyme Q10. How does reversatrol help eye health? It can scavenge free radicals and reduce inflammation. Ubiquinol is a vital role on the cellular level. It's a key component of the electron transport chain. It helps protect those cells, including those in the eyes, from oxidative damage. Ubiquinol is the active, highly bioavailable form of coenzyme Q10. So when you're looking at supplements, we usually recommend ubiquinol over coenzyme Q10. It plays a vital role in energy production, otherwise known as mitochondrial function. Both compounds target core mechanisms of age-related eye decline. Reversatrol has more direct research linking it to specific ocular diseases. Ubiquinol is generally important for the overall cellular health and energy in high demand tissues like the eyes. So super important for lyucoma and macular degeneration. But what foods contain reversatrol? Grapes, especially the dark grapes, especially the skin, are key sources. Blueberries, cranberries, mulberries, blackberries, nuts, pistachios, walnuts, dark chocolate, cocoa. Other sources are plums, peaches, tangerines, and apples. Foods containing ubiquinol, oily fish like salmon, tuna, mackerel, and sardines, organ meats like liver, heart and kidney, meats, beef and chicken muscle meats are also sources. Nuts and seeds, pistachios, sesame seeds, and vegetables, even though it's small, but vegetables like broccoli, spinach, and cauliflower are really important. Glaucoma studies show that reversatrol can help protect the optic nerve and retinoganglion cells from damage caused by high intraocular pressure. In cataracts, due to its antioxidant properties, reversatrol may inhibit oxidative stress, which can contribute to the opacification of the eye lens. In macular degeneration, it's demonstrated anti-angiogenic properties, inhibiting abnormal blood valve growth and can protect retinopigment epithelial cells. Again, super important nutrient if you've got macular degeneration. Studies in human trials suggest that reversatrol has benefits for vision far reaching many other nutrients. My recommendation is if you have glaucoma, macular degeneration, take statins. Please add ubiquinol and reversatrol to your supplement list.
